Even though it seems like winter has no end in sight, that doesn’t mean it’s too early to begin looking for your summer job. We’ve pulled together some tips to help start your job search.
Finding Summer Job Opportunities
While kicking off your summer job search may be a matter of checking online postings, it’s important to remember that this isn’t the only way to find a job. Start networking now: tell everyone you know that you’re looking for a job – they might just know about a job opportunity for you.
You can also set up informational interviews with professionals in your field to get in-depth job tips. If you make a good impression during the interview, you’ll gain a valuable contact who may consider you or refer you for a job if one comes up. (Note: information interviews should not be used to ask directly for a job).
Job Application Tips:
When applying for summer jobs, you may be tempted to simply put together one resumé and submit a copy to any employer that’s hiring. However, employers will be looking at your resumé to determine whether you have the right skills for the job. Create a specific resumé and cover letter for each application to highlight exactly how your skills match the job.
Interviews help the employer get to know you as a person and to decide whether you fit with the organization, so it’s a good idea to practice your interview skills with career counsellors, family, friends, and/or other connections in your network. Don’t forget to research the company and prepare questions to ask during an interview, so you can really show your interest in the job.
Use Social Media in Your Job Search
Whether you’re a social media maven or you prefer to maintain a low-key online personality, you should consider how social media can make your job search more effective.
Here are some social media job hunting tips:
- Join LinkedIn to find and stay in touch with colleagues or to research professionals at target companies.
- If you’re an avid Twitter user, follow people and organizations relevant to your job search – employers may tweet about job opportunities or information sessions.
- You can also use Facebook in your job search, but make sure to review your privacy settings so potential employers can’t access compromising personal information.
- Create a blog to showcase your knowledge and interest in a particular field, as well as to display your writing and/or design skills.
The Internet makes it extremely easy for employers to find information about you. You can Google yourself and see what comes up. By using LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and/or a blog in your job search, you can work to create a more consistent and visible brand for yourself online.
