Nichole Ekkert-Vine, a third-year journalism student, shares why new students should attend and what participants can expect from Summer Orientation.

My name is Nichole, I am going into my third year of journalism with a minor in film studies, and I am the Team Leader for Summer Orientation this year! Summer Orientation is a fantastic way to orient yourself to the campus and the atmosphere before even coming to Carleton in the fall! It is a great experience and allows you to get the inside scoop on university life. Making the transition from high school to university can sometimes be really challenging for both students and parents, but the benefits that Summer Orientation has to offer can help a lot with easing all the worries you and your family have.

At Summer Orientation, we hold many presentations on important aspects of Carleton such as campus services, academic support services, financing your education, residence life and off-campus living. In addition to this, we have presentations catered specifically to parents and what parents can do to guide their student through the transition. These presentations will help answer any questions you or your family may have before coming to university, and allow you to ask any questions that are still lingering. As the day goes on, students will also get assistance in registering for their courses and learn tips about using Carleton Central.

In the mornings and afternoons, tours of the campus will be going out and both students and parents will get the chance to see the campus and learn their way around. Tours for students and tours for parents will be equipped with a leader who is an expert in the types of questions parents and students may be asking, and are more than happy to show you around and point out interesting aspects of campus.

The most important thing to remember about Summer Orientation is that everyone attending is, or has been, a first year student at some point, and no question is a bad question. Our team is extremely excited to meet everyone, and we can’t wait to talk to parents and students about Carleton! We are here to help you get the most out of your university experience, starting with your first time on campus. We hope to see you this summer!
